Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of field boundary and other ditches of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are located at TG 3170 3384. The main feature of this group of cropmarks is an H-shaped arrangement of field boundary ditches centred on TG 3173 3373. Two fields are partly visible, divided by a roughly northwest to southeast aligned double ditch. The northern field is 128m wide by at least 96m long. The southwest to northeast aligned ditch defining the western boundary of these fields, between TG 3165 3371 and TG 3172 3383, appears to correspond with a boundary marked on the 1827 Paston enclosure map (S2). The fields shown to the east of that boundary in 1827 belong to the post medieval enclosure field pattern, elements of which still survive. The fields defined by the cropmarks were not present and are of an earlier date. It is likely that the southwest to northeast aligned ditch survived from the earlier field system and was incorporated into the enclosure field pattern. Further northwest to southeast aligned ditches 185m further to the north and to the west of the H arrangement at TG 3167 3380 may also be field boundaries associated with the pre-enclosure pattern. It is probable that this field pattern is of medieval to early post medieval date. Other fragmentary ditch cropmarks are present in the northern and western part of this group. The show a variety of alignments and, although they are undated, they are likely to date from several different periods. Among these cropmarks at TG 3152 3378 are two parallel north to south aligned ditches. It is possible that these cropmarks relate to an undated trackway or field boundary ditches.
