Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), from approximately TG 2905 3685 to TG 2906 3683. There is no dating evidence associated with the feature but its orientation would suggest that it predates the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic maps (for example, (S2)). Other cropmarks visible in the surrounding area on the same aerial photographs are the product of quarrying and modern agricultural activity, and have consequently not been mapped.
Numerous field systems and field boundaries have been mapped in the surrounding area, generally of Iron Age to Roman date or of medieval to post medieval date. The ditch could form an outlying part of the field systems mapped approximately 320m to its northeast (NHER 38933), parts of which may date to the earlier of these two phases.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 16 December 2004.
