Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A series of ditched features of unknown date visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs on Newman’s Hill, Cottage Woods, Northrepps (S1). The site is centred on TG 2349 4071. The origin of these features is not known, although they may relate to former woodland boundaries or activities and therefore parts of the site may be post medieval in date.
The main component is an intermittent linear ditch, 1.5m to 3m wide, running from TG 2347 4075 to TG 2345 4069. This linear runs quite close to the route of a path on (S2), although it is not entirely clear whether it is the same feature, as the routes diverge slightly. To the east of this centred on TG 2352 4072 is a double ditched feature, consisting an arrangement of two L-shaped ditches. Several narrow and fragmentary soilmarks of ditches are also visible in the vicinity of these main features. Some of these components are double ditched and may indicate former trackways or paths.
The soilmarks of other linear features were visible in this area, although the path of these were consistent with those depicted in (S2) and were therefore not mapped by the NMP.
