Summary

World War Two anti tank cubes, the remains of three road blocks and a cleared area or area of hard standing are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The hard standing/cleared area may have been associated with the nearby railway station and/or part of a military site. The road blocks and the cubes, along with sites to the east and south (NHER 38525 and 32520), were probably used during Home Guard exercises. By 1967 many of the cubes had been removed and houses built across the area.

Map

March 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A series of World War Two anti tank cubes are clearly visible on RAF 1946 (S1) aerial photographs. These are a short distance along the railway line to the west of the station in Sheringham (just beyond the bridge). The tank trap cubes form a long linear strip of anti tank cubes that is divided into two stretches by a 30m gap running from TG 1549 4308 to TG 1542 4307 and from TG 1539 4306 to TG 1534 4306. By 1967 it is clear that many of these cubes have been removed and houses built across the area (S2). To the north and west of the cubes is a possible area of hard standing or cleared ground which has been in recent use, centred on TG 1536 4297. It is possible that this area relates to the railway station, although it may also have been part of a World War Two military site, as there appears to be a road block set up at the entrance to this area. Two other sets of barriers are also apparent to the east along Church Street. All that remains of these defences in 1946 are sets of parallel scars or worn lines across the road. Several other marks presumably marking the position of former temporary structures are also visible. This site, along with other road blocks and tank traps to the east and south (NHER 38525 and 32520), appear to from part of a military training area, probably relating to Home Guard exercises during World War Two.
