Map

January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of undated and post medieval field boundaries and other ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3301 3306. Some of the ditch cropmarks within this group relate to the post medieval field pattern shown on an 1827 map of Bacton (S2). These include a curving ditch that extends from TG 3276 3298 to TG 3296 3301 and a ditch and bank defined boundary between TG 3307 3309 and TG 3318 3314. The second of these two appears to form part of a trackway shown on the 1827 map, part of which survives 250m to the northeast. These boundaries had been altered or removed by the time of the tithe map in 1845 (S3).

Crossed by these boundaries are other unrelated ditches. A curving ditch extends from TG 3303 3308 to TG 3292 3300 with a ditch-defined trackway leading off to its northwest. It is possible that this boundary represents a continuation of the post medieval boundary and trackway to its east, suggesting a possible medieval origin for both. The trackway that leads off from it is visible for 44m on a northwest to southeast alignment. Further ditches on roughly parallel and perpendicular alignments are present to the southwest of this trackway, suggesting that these ditches form part of a fragmentary field system. A short section of parallel ditches, may indicate another trackway on a southwest to northeast alignment at TG 3282 3297. Other curving ditches, such as those at TG 3284 3294 and TG 3323 3323 do not appear to be related to either of these field patterns and are of unknown date and function.
