NHER 39229 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of probable undated field boundaries

Cropmarks of undated ditches and banks, probably field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3278 3171. The ditches in the western half of the group follow two different roughly southwest to northeast alignments. Although two of these, at TG 3251 3176, appear to be perpendicular to a post medieval path or drain (NHER 39228), there is no reason to assume that they are necessarily connected. The cropmarks in the eastern part of the group appear to relate to a fragmentary field system. Its western side is represented by a north to south aligned bank cropmark between TG 3282 3173 and TG 3281 3164. To the east of this boundary are two roughly west to east aligned ditches marking the north and south sides of a field. It is possible that the present road defines the eastern side of the field. An L-shaped ditch and a west to east linear ditch to the north appear to be related to the field boundaries. An intermittent northwest to southeast aligned ditch between TG 3299 3175 and TG 3306 3168 may be the northeast boundary of this field, resulting in it having a polygonal shape. However, other similarly aligned boundaries are present further to the northwest (NHER 29226) and it is more likely that it is related to them. These boundary cropmarks do not relate to the present field pattern and are likely to pre-date the laying out of Witton Park in 1770, but their actual dates are not known.
