Summary

Undated earthworks, including a low bank and possible hollow way, were identified at this location during a site visit in 2004. A variety of linear banks and ditches are visible here as earthworks on aerial sources dating from 1945 to 2018, but it is not certain to what extent these are the same features as those identified during the site visit, and their date, function and archaeological significance is uncertain. Visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 indicates that some elements still survived as low earthworks at that date.

Location

Map sheet TF83NE
Civil Parish NORTH CREAKE, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

A pasture field in the north of the village of North Creake bounded by three roads, with old farm buildings, now converted into dwellings, to north and west. A low bank runs east to west towards an old dew pond in the centre of the field. To south, a slight hollow way is visible on the same alignment. Possible other slight earthworks difficult to identify in long rough grass. Perhaps connected to demolished manor to the east.
H. Paterson (A&E), 30 November 2004.

February 2026. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
A variety of linear banks and ditches are visible here as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S2) and visualised lidar data (S3). The features mapped by the project do not conform particularly well with the description above, and it is not certain to what extent these are the same features as those identified during the 2004 site visit. The date, function and archaeological significance of the mapped features is also uncertain, with different elements visible on different sources, suggesting some may be of relatively late date and/or be temporary features or marks. Some of the features appear to relate to former boundaries, while others could relate to drainage. Visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2018 indicates that some elements still survived as low earthworks at that date.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 2 February 2026.
