Summary

Conflicting reports as to the nature of No 33 make interpretation difficult, but the original building may predate the 18th-century terrace (Odd nos 33 to 39) that it is now part of; it is possible that the building may have been a small medieval hall, modified in the 16th century.

June 2003. Building Survey.
Examination of No 33 Damgate Street.
The original building appears to have been a small open hall, perhaps with a smoke bay to the north, and a two-storeyed end to the south. There may have been an unglazed window to the rear. At some time in the 16th century a brick chimeny was added and the floor was inserted, the window was changed to a door, the roof was raised, and an outbuilding added to the rear. The stairdoor appears to date from the 18th century but may have replaced an earlier door from when the stack was inserted. At the beginning of the 19th century a more substantial building was built on the rear, and first floor access made from this range.
