Summary

A group of undated linear cropmarks, including several parallel ditches (probably field boundaries) and a trackway, are visible on aerial photographs. They appear to represent at least two phases of land division which pre-date the earliest consulted map (Mundesley Tithe Map, 1829). Some elements, which appear to cut across the post-medieval system of land division, may date back to the Iron Age to Romano-British period (compare, for example, NHER 38933 to the west). Others probably represent medieval to post-medieval land allotment.

Map

April 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks described below were previously recorded as NHER 15974.

A group of linear ditches, probably field boundaries, and a trackway are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-4), centred at TG 3033 3678. The features that cut across the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic maps (e.g. S5) may date back to the Iron Age and/or Romano-British period. They are perhaps an eastern continuation of elements mapped 150m to the west as part of NHER 38933. These include the trackway which crosses the site from north-west to south-east, and perhaps also the westernmost ditch within the site, although the latter might instead be the product of modern activity associated with the adjacent golf course. Other elements, principally those ditches aligned approximately east-to-west, fit the post-medieval field pattern and in some cases are depicted on historic maps (S6). These divide the area into narrow strips suggestive of medieval land allotment.
