Map

January 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The remains of two earthwork banks on the saltmarsh are visible on RAF 1946 (S1), BKS 1988 (S2), Hunting Survey 1969 (S3) and OS 1994 to 5 (S4) and (S5) vertical aerial photographs. As well as on NLA oblique images from 1993 (S6) and 1990 (S7). These banks are not marked on current OS 1:10000 or 25" 2nd edition OS (S8) maps, but can be determined on the 1inch 1st edition OS map (S9). These banks can also be seen as distinct banks on the aerial photographs, although no longer being kept up. One bank runs from NGR TG0231 4471 to TG0271 4417 with a fork branching off from TG0255 4444 to TG0265 4454. Then at right angles to the main bank, at its southeastern end, another bank runs across from TG0263 4408 to TG0273 4418. (This southern bank is also included on the 1:10560 1st edition OS (S10)). The banks (in particular the fork) are clearer on the 1946 images than on the later ones. The date of these features is uncertain, but due to their inclusion on the 1" 1st edition OS they must be of at least post medieval date. They probably formed a part of the local sea defences in this area.
A possible continuation of this bank can be seen to the west, see NHER 27820.
H. Clare (NMP), 9 January 2003.

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 11), Context 925:
A sea defence bank was observed in the saltmarsh to the north of Blakeney quay. It was aligned east to west between TG 02628 44078 and TG 02739 44194. It appeared to be later in date than the bank [context 891].
See assessment report (S11) for further details.
