Full Description
March 2003. Norfolk NMP.
There appears to be about six small structures visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1-2) and 1953 (floodlight) (S3). These small structures are aligned parallel to the coast and run from TG0467 4533 to TG0470 4532. They have the appearance of concrete. Their purpose is not known. Although not certain, it seems likely that they have a military origin due to their proximity to other World War Two coastal defence sites located on Cley Eye (NHER 27793, 27794, 24184 and 32455).
A short distance to the east of these small structures there seem to be about six small ‘pits’; it is likely that they are connected in some way. They are similarly spaced and on approximately the same alignment running from NGR TG0472 4532 to TG0474 4531.
H. Clare (NMP), 20 March 2003.
May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 11), Context 91:
Five concrete blocks were partially embedded in the shingle bank between TG 04679 45328 and TG 04720 45312. All contained iron fittings; one had a section of brick 'skin' attached. They would have been part of the Second World War defences at Cley.
See assessment report (S4) for further details.
