Full Description
April 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A possible stretch of World War Two barbed wire and a pair of weapons pits may be visible on aerial photographs within an area of coastal grassland to rear of the dunes, what is now the Sea Breeze campsite, Eccles-on-Sea (S1). The site is centred on TG 4205 2811. The possible line of barbed wire runs from TG 4200 2812 to TG 4216 2810, although this not definite, as it could be the line of a path, having the same dark, sinuous appearance of the former course of barbed wire on aerial photographs. The earthworks of two narrow slit trenches or weapons pits may be visible to the north of this obstruction. A small group of structures is centred on TG 4198 2811 to the west of the site, although it is not certain whether these are military in origin or agricultural. None of these possible military structures are visible on the oblique aerial photographs from 1940, although the field cannot be seen clearly (S2). There are a great many military sites in the immediate vicinity, such as NHER 25960, 27317-20, and it is clear that military training exercises were taking place on the coast in this area during the war years, see NHER 27292 for example.
