Full Description
May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 26), Context 150:
A wooden hulk/wreck was found embedded within estuarine mud. It measured about 45m by 5m.
A 19th to 20th century iron bolt collected from it provides a date.
See assessment report (S1) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 27 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.
March 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The wreck or hulk described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S2)-(S4), at approximately TG 5096 0761 (see below). It could have been placed at this location to consolidate the southern edge of the Yare channel. Unlike other nearby wrecks, e.g. NHER 27637 20m to the southwest, it is not visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 (S5), indicating that it may have been placed here in the post World War Two period, even if the vessel itself is older.
It should be noted that the wreck was originally mapped by the NMP between TG 5098 0761 and TG 5095 0760, but this position was rather approximate, as due to a lack of control points the aerial photographs could not be accurately rectified. Consequently, the mapping was moved approximately 5.5m northwest to correlate with the field survey data.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 29 March 2006.
