Summary

The line of a track or road is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1988. It appears on early 19th century maps and is probably post medieval in origin. In 1946 it may still have been in use but, if so, it went out of use soon after this date.

Map

January 2003. Norfolk NMP.
A track or road can be seen cutting across the field on the 1946 RAF (S1) and 1988 BKS (S2) aerial photographs. It seems likely to be of about post medieval date and appears to still be in use on the 1946 images, though has gone out of use shortly after. This track runs from TG0512 4367 to TG0475 4387, where it reaches a wood. It seems to be (or have once been) a driveway for Cley Hall and is shown on both the 1 inch (S3) and 1:10560 (S4) 1st edition Ordnance Survey maps and on the 25 inch 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map (S5), but it is no longer shown on the current 1:10000 Ordnance Survey map (S6).
(On the BKS images the track is showing up as a crop/soilmark of compacted ground).
H. Clare (NMP), 16 January 2003.
