Full Description
March 2003. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two radar station can be seen on RAF 1945 (S1-2) and 1946 (S3-4) aerial photographs. There are also some remains of it evident on OS images from 1973 (S5). The site is centred on NGR TG0064 4044, with what appears to be 4 masts located at TG0062 4048, TG0070 4047, TG0061 4040 and TG0069 4039. There is a building within the area inside the masts and this is located at NGR TG0063 4047; there is a track which leads from the near by road to this building. A further structure associated can be seen at TG0060 4044. This radar station is clearly associated with Langham airfield (NHER 1891).
H. Clare (NMP), 17 March 2003.
December 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The ‘radar station’ described above does not conform to the scale and plan of other such sites on the Norfolk coast, nor is it listed in Dobinson’s comprehensive account of radar installations (S6)-(S7). Comparison with other sites, such as NHER 27662 and 42518, which have been identified by Roger Thomas of English Heritage suggests that it is perhaps a World War Two radio telephony and/or wireless telegraphy station. These were used for air traffic control and were generally located near airfields. It is notable that this example had four towers, rather than the masts evident at the two sites referred to above.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 20 December 2006.
