Full Description
June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of ditches, probably field boundaries of medieval and post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2). These cropmarks are located at TG 5036 1239 immediately to the northwest of Caister Castle (NHER 8671). A total of four sections of ditch cropmark are visible. These are predominantly aligned southwest to northeast, parallel to the Castle itself and roughly perpendicular to the modern road. It is likely that these are medieval to post medieval field boundaries either associated with or aligned on the castle. These boundaries are not marked on the 1812 Caister enclosure map (S3) or later maps. These cropmarks overlap undated, possibly Iron Age to Roman, ditch cropmarks to the west (NHER 27399).
