NHER 27404 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated ditches

Cropmarks of undated linear and curvilinear ditches, possibly field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 5036 1462 and lie at 10m OD. A total of 16 sections of ditch cropmark are present in this group. The ditches exhibit a range of different alignments making the identification of any clear patterns difficult. Some of the ditches have roughly north to south and west to east alignments similar to the surviving post medieval field pattern and may be of contemporary date. However the majority, like the curving ditch in the west of the group, are of unknown date.

January 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Although the excavated trenches coincided with a number of the cropmarks there was little apparent correlation between these and the features exposed. The one possible exception was the curving, fragmentary cropmark running between TG 5025 1461 and TG 5036 1453, the western end of which lay close to two similarly-aligned ditches (one of which produced Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery). This may though have between coincidental as the other two trenches that coincided with this cropmark revealed no potentially corresponding remains.
