Summary

A probable emergency water supply tank, dating to World War Two, is visible as an extant and subsequently demolished structure on aerial photographs. It was erected between February 1941 and March 1944, and was demolished by August 1945. Such tanks were sited to provide an emergency water supply in the event of a fire caused by a bombing raid. This example may have been located for use in the surrounding residential area, as well as at the adjacent racecourse which was under military control.

Map

June 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two emergency water supply tank is visible as an extant and subsequently demolished structure on aerial photographs (S1), (S2) and (S3), centred at TG 5276 0981. The appearance of the tank is slightly different from those mapped at other locations in the town (e.g. NHER 27360); this may be due to it perhaps having a cover. It is first visible on photographs taken in March 1944 (S1), but may have been constructed some time before this date. It was demolished by August 1945 (S3), when its base (or the impression left by its base) was still visible.
