Summary

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earthwork (probably an earth covered structure) on 1940s aerial photographs. The shelter, which is located at Grouts Silk Factory, is probably an industrial shelter provided for workers at the factory. Since the end of the war the site has been levelled and partially built over.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork bank, probably an earth covered structure forming the roof of a World War Two air raid shelter, is visible on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5264 0792. Its location at Grouts Silk Factory suggests that it was almost certainly an industrial shelter, although its relatively small size indicates that other, larger or more numerous shelters must also have existed at the factory. Some are perhaps visible to the west (NHER 27439). The shelter appears to be made up of two, parallel structures. No entrance is visible on the consulted aerial photographs but the southern end of the shelter is obscured by shadow. The site has since been levelled and partially built over.
