Summary

A possible World War Two Anderson type air raid shelter is visible as what is presumably an earth and vegetation covered structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Small shelters of this type were usually erected for the use of a single family or household, and typically, as is the case here, were located in private gardens. The shelter is not visible on more recent aerial photographs and was probably levelled soon after the end of the war.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two Anderson shelter is visible as an earth and vegetation covered structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 5224 0833. The feature is small and is difficult to see clearly within the confines of the small garden in which it lies. As a consequence, its interpretation is uncertain and the postulated shelter could just be an outbuilding. Its central position along the length of the garden, its possibly curved profile, and its similarity to other Anderson shelters mapped elsewhere in Great Yarmouth (e.g. NHER 27410), however, suggest that its identification as an air raid shelter is plausible. Its absence on more recent aerial photographs suggests that it was levelled or removed after the end of the war.
