Summary

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant structure on 1940s aerial photographs. It is a large surface or semi-sunken shelter, located in the grounds of a former school, and was presumably provided for the pupils and staff of the school. The site has been built over since the end of the war.

Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as a surface or possibly semi-sunken structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at approximately TG 5197 0832. It is probably a covered trench shelter, provided for the staff and pupils of the adjacent school (shown on S2), and perhaps similar in design to proposals for industrial shelters (S3). It has at least one entrance, at its southeast corner, which is protected by a blast wall. It almost certainly has further entrances; a track leading to a projection to the south of the northeast corner (at TG 5198 0832) probably marks the location of another. The site has been built over since the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 20 July 2005.
