Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox is visible on contemporary and later aerial photographs (S1 to S4). This pillbox was located on the south side of Norwich Road at TG 5162 1226. Due to subsequent realignment of the road its site now lies under the present carriageway. It was hexagonal in plan and appears to be a type 22 pillbox with the entrance on its southwest face (S4). The earliest aerial photographs showing this pillbox date to 1944 (S1), although it is likely that it was constructed earlier in the war. It was clearly positioned to defend the Norwich Road access into Caister on Sea village and is supported by a spigot mortar emplacement 230m to the north (NHER 27480). The road had been realigned and the pillbox destroyed by 1965 (S5).
