Summary

A World War Two surface air raid shelter is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1945. It was a small public shelter and was located on the northern side of Bullocks Loke. Possibly of local design, it was probably constructed soon after December 1940. By July 1946 it had been demolished. Similar shelters were present in Caister on Sea village (NHER 27482, 27487, 27500 and 27501).

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1 to S3). This shelter was located at TG 5215 1203 on the northern side of Bullocks Loke. It appears to have been constructed in two parts. The northern part comprised the shelter itself in two adjoining sections with barrel type roofs. The southern part formed the entrance area and had a flat concrete roof. This was a small public surface shelter sited to serve the properties on this vicinity. This may have been a local air raid shelter design and others of this type were present in Caister village (NHER 27482, 27487, 27500 and 27501). The shelter on Bullocks Loke was not present on aerial photographs dating to December 1940 (S4) but was probably constructed shortly afterwards. It had been demolished by July 1946 (S5). The area immediately to the north of this shelter was in use as a military site by May 1944 (NHER 27510).
