Map

July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A wooden structure, probably part of a sea defence breakwater or revetment, is visible on Caister on Sea beach on aerial photographs dating to 1940 and 1946 (S1 to S3). This structure was located at TG 5266 1254. It comprised five parallel rows of timbers, which are aligned approximately northeast, to southwest. The northern end of the timbers appear to have been buried in the beach (S1). The location of this structure corresponds to a possible revetment or breakwater at the base of the cliffs shown on the 1938 edition of the 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (S4). The difference in the distance between this structure and the cliffs on the 1940 and 1946 aerial photographs emphasises the high level of erosion on this section of coast, with approximately 60m having been lost.
J. Albone (NMP), 27 July 2005.
