Full Description
July 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two bomb craters are visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1), (S2), (S3) and (S4). These two craters were located 45m apart at TG 5251 1006. The two craters are visible as earthworks in an area of allotments to the east of Caister Road and north of Jellicoe Road. The diameter of the southern crater is 6.5m with the northern one measuring 4.5m across. These craters are present on aerial photographs dating to 2 March 1944 (S1) and are obviously the result of an air raid before that date. It is possible that they relate to an air raid in that took place in the afternoon of 6th March 1941. On that date a single Dornier 17Z dropped a total of ten bombs, with the only casualties being a dozen chickens on an allotment near Jellicoe Road (S6). Another possible date for the air raid is 17th June 1941, when 12 high explosive bombs were dropped in the Caister Road area and across the racecourse (S6). The craters are more clearly visible on later aerial photographs and were still extant in July 1946 (S2), (S3) and (S4). The area of the allotments had been built over by September 1965 (S5).
J. Albone (NMP), 28 July 2005.
