Summary

A large World War Two surface or semi sunken air raid shelter is visible as an extant structure on 1940s aerial photographs. It lay behind a former convent school and was presumably constructed for use by staff and pupils. After the end of the war the shelter was removed or demolished and the site has since been built over.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1) to (S3), centred at TG 5295 0762. Like many of the large air raid shelters in Great Yarmouth, it lay in close proximity to a school (S4) (since demolished) and was presumably built for the protection of staff and pupils. It consisted of a long rectangular structure, which either stood at ground level or was slightly sunken. It appears to have had a trapezoidal profile. Two covered entrances are visible on its south side. Small structures and indentations at each end of the shelter probably mark the location of ventilation shafts. A patch of what may have been camouflage paint or some kind of covering is visible on photographs taken in April 1944 (S2). More recent aerial photographs and modern maps indicate that the shelter was removed after the war and the site has since been built over.
