August 2005. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Prehistoric unburnt worked flints, including blade-like flakes which hint at a presence in the Later Mesolithic or Earlier Neolithic, retouched pieces, knives/scrapers, a borer/point and a probable leaf shaped arrowhead which may have started out as a small flaked knife or sickle.
Roman pottery.
Post medieval brick, tile glass, shell and clay pipe stem fragments, pottery.
See report (S1) for further details.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 15 September 2015.
November 2005. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation by trial trenching. Contexts 1-59.
Evidence for prehistoric activity was identified in the western part of the development area in the form of cut features, and artefacts across the site. Later ditches and features were also revealed in the western area and further east, including at least one Neolithic pit, whilst Romano-British and medieval artefacts were collected from across the site.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
J. Allen (NLA), 17 February 2006.
September-October 2006. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Phase 1.
The excavation exposed five Neolithic pits, and five earlier Neolithic tree throws. In addition, two large Bronze Age pits were identified and three Roman period ditches, exposed in the 2005 evaluation, were revealed extending across the site. Three medieval furrows, sealed by a deep deposit of colluvial were revealed at the southernmost edge of the site, a pit and a small potentially medieval ditch, which post dated the furrows was also exposed.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
J. Allen (NLA), 4 July 2007.
