Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A cropmark of a post medieval trackway is visible on aerial photographs (S1) to (S6). This cropmark extends from Toll-Gate Cottages to Nova Scotia Cottages at West Caister and is centred on TG 5025 1305. It was previously recorded as part of NHER 8684. Two parallel ditch cropmarks are visible for up to 340m on a southwest to northeast alignment between TG 5018 1288 and TG 5030 1319. These define a road or trackway that led to Nova Scotia Cottages and via an extant farm track on to Nova Scotia Farm. The northern end of the cropmark joins a surviving section where the trackway enters the small farmyard at Nova Scotia Cottages. This trackway is marked on both Faden’s 1797 and Bryant’s 1826 county maps, although its alignment is shown as being slightly more south to north (S7) and (S8). It is also marked on the 1812 Caister-on-Sea enclosure map where it is shown on a more accurate alignment (S9). It is likely that this trackway is of post medieval date, contemporary with Nova Scotia Farm. A second trackway, possibly of similar date, is present further to the north (NHER 27575).
