Summary

Cropmarks of a trackway of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. The trackway is defined by two parallel ditches and starts on the north side of the small farmyard at Nova Scotia Cottages at West Caister before heading north then northeast. Its relationship to the farmyard suggests that it is likely to be contemporary with a trackway further to the south (NHER 27574) but that it may have gone out of use by the late eighteenth century.

Map

August 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a trackway of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2). These cropmarks are centred on TG 5046 1336. The trackway is defined by two parallel ditches and starts on the north side of the small farmyard at Nova Scotia Cottages at TG 5029 1328. From this point it heads roughly north for 34m before turning to the northeast and continuing intermittently for another 405m to TG 5067 1342. Although the trackway probably continued further to the east, it was not visible as cropmarks. It is not marked on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk or the Caister on Sea enclosure map (S3) and (S4). However, its relationship to the farmyard at its western end suggests that it is likely to be contemporary with a trackway further to the south (NHER 27574) but that it may have gone out of use by the late eighteenth century. A section through this trackway was excavated on the route of the Bacton to Yarmouth gas pipeline (NHER 12828)

May 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of field east of Nova Scotia Road and north of Nova Scotia Cottages.
A single east-north-east to west-south-east aligned, magnetically-depleted linear anomaly recorded at TG 5032 1332 is probably associated with this group, although it doesn’t actually coincide with one of the mapped cropmarks.
See NHER 64679 for further details.
