Summary

Aerial photographs taken in 1966 showed the cropmarks of sub-rectangular ditched enclosures at this location. These appear to relate to a deserted medieval village. It is probable that this represents settlement on the edge of Morley Green.

Map

Cropmarks.
Sub-rectangular ditched enclosures, appears to be a deserted medieval village.
Seen on (S1).

May 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthwork ditches representing field boundaries, enclosures and the probable deserted medieval village described above are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4) on land to the south-west of St Botolph’s Church, Morley St Botolph.
It is probable that this represents settlement on the edge of Morley Green (S5).
At the western end of the possible settlement, at least one enclosure or possible toft is visible centred on TM 0611 9975, measuring 21m by a maximum of 24m, sited on the edge of a possible trackway or hollow way running north-south, with field boundaries extending from it. Further possible field boundaries and trackways are visible in the field to the east, centred on TM 0630 9974. The original polygon has been extended to the north where these features were visible extending into the next field, and to the east, where there may be further earthwork field boundaries or fragments of enclosure visible as far east as TM 0686 9994, although these eastern earthworks may in fact represent drainage features.
This area has been fieldwalked (NHER 30537) and metal-detected (NHER 33229, 33893, 33894) and a number of Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval finds have been recovered.
