Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two air raid shelters is visible on aerial photographs (S1 to S3), centred at TG 5297 0534. The shelters, which appear to have been under construction in September 1940 (S1), were probably provided for workers in the industrial buildings immediately to their east. Seven entrances are visible, some of which are revetted. The vague outline of earth covered, semi sunken structures is also visible on some aerial photographs but was not clear enough to map. The exact number of shelters is therefore unclear, and whether each entrance leads into an individual shelter, or into part of a larger shelter made up of several conjoined segments is not known. Aerial photographs taken in September 1945 (S3) indicate that the shelters were already being demolished by this date. More recent aerial photographs (for example, S4) show that the site now underlies modern buildings and a car park.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 22 September 2005.
