Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a possible medieval to post medieval post mill are visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located to the southwest of Filby church at TG 4680 1310. A penannular ring ditch cropmark with a 24m external diameter is visible. It has a broad ditch, up to 4.5m across and a 5m wide entrance on its northeast side. A 9m wide cross-shaped positive cropmark is visible in the centre of the ring ditch representing the base of a post mill. Although this cropmark is not well-defined it is likely that it relates to a medieval to post medieval post mill. The site lies on a slight plateau on a northwest facing slope at approximately 12m OD. No evidence for a mill at this location was identified on Faden's 1797 county map or later cartographic sources (S2). A medieval coin and strap fitting have previously been found in the vicinity of this cropmark (NHER 33540).
