Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two road block and a possibly associated structure are visible on aerial photographs, (S1)-(S3), centred at approximately TG 5306 0622. The road block was one of several structures of this type visible on photographs taken in 1940-41, although in this case the barrier was double and is only clearly visible on photographs taken in 1940, (S1). Their location and rather insubstantial appearance suggests that these were the barricades (constructed of herring barrels filled with concrete) which in response to the threat of invasion were erected across roads leading from Great Yarmouth seafront during the early years of the war (S4). The small structure to the west, which appears to be surrounded by a blast wall, could have been an associated defensive building such as a guard house but is only clearly visible on aerial photographs taken later in the war, e.g. (S3). The road block itself was removed by at least July 1944, (S5); there is no trace of either the road block or the associated building on modern aerial photographs.
It should be noted that due to a lack of photographs suitable for rectification, the road block was sketched from an unrectified image, (S1), and that its location is therefore approximate.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 September 2005.
