Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Eleven probable World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs (S1), centred around TG 5288 0609. The shelters lay in close proximity to each other, in the gardens of 6, 8, 12 and 44 Micawber Avenue, 30 and 34 Barkis Road and 5, 9, 31, 33 and 47 Copperfield Avenue. The majority of the shelters are visible as earthwork mounds, probably covering semi sunken structures such as Anderson shelters. One of these (at TG 5288 0602, 47 Copperfield Avenue) has an elaborate entrance incorporating some kind of structure. Four of the probable shelters (at TG 5287 0616, TG 5288 0616, TG 5288 0612 and TG 5287 0606) do not appear to have had any covering, or only a light (and consequently unmapped) covering of earth or vegetation. They appear to have been curved in profile, however, and are likely to have been surface shelters although in the absence of other evidence the possibility that they were merely outbuildings cannot be ruled out. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any of the shelters now survives above ground and they were probably levelled soon after the end of the war.
