Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Five probable World War Two air raid shelters are visible as earthworks and structures on aerial photographs taken in 1945 (S1) and (S2), centred around TG 5297 0596. The shelters lay in close proximity to each other, in the back gardens of 50, 62 and 66 Harbord Crescent and 42 and 44 Peggotty Road. They are all visible as earthwork mounds, probably covering semi-sunken structures such as Anderson shelters. The westernmost shelter (at TG 5295 0595, 42 Peggotty Road) had a sunken entrance. The shelter at 50 Harbord Crescent (TG 5297 0598), which is large enough to be visible on aerial photographs taken in July 1944 (S3), possibly had an entrance at the southern end of its east side. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any of the shelters now survives above ground and they were probably levelled soon after the end of the war.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 29 September 2005.
