A cropmark of a trapezoidal enclosure of probable Roman date is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is located at TG 4742 1298 and was previously recorded as part of NHER 16336. The enclosure in roughly trapezoidal in plan with rounded corners. It is defined by a narrow ditch and measures up to 43m by 46m externally. A 5m wide gap, possible a entrance, is present in the ditch on the northeast side of the enclosure. A curved ditch is attached to the western corner of the enclosure and continues along its northwest side. This defines an area on the outside of the enclosure measuring 6m wide by at least 23m long. It is possible that this forms an annexe to the main enclosure or that it represents a different phase in its development. The alignment of this enclosure is similar to a fragmentary field system of Roman date located immediately to its east (NHER 27685). It is likely that the enclosure is of Iron Age to Roman date. Roman pottery and coins have previously been found in the vicinity of this cropmark (NHER 16336).
J. Albone (NMP), 28 September 2005.
