Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A low circular mound of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs, within an area of grass adjacent to the dunes to the west of Sea Palling (S1 to S3). The site is centred on TG 4277 2747. The origin of this mound is not known and it is possible that it is of geological origin. If the earthwork is archaeological then it may be post medieval in date, possibly representing a mill mound. An alternative interpretation is that the mound represents the remains of a Bronze Age barrow, although this seems unlikely.
The mound is clearly visible in 1946 and 1953 (S1 and S2) and measures 13.5m in diameter. It is located next to an area of World War Two date earthworks (NHER 27313), although this mound does not look recently constructed in 1946 (S1). Earlier aerial photographs of the site (1940) are too dark at this location to distinguish whether this feature is present at that date. The mound looks like it has been largely ploughed flat by 1955 (S3) and a light coloured soilmark is visible in approximate location of the former mound. However in 1963 aerial photographs (S4) also reveal that there are several other roughly circular soilmarks like this in the same field. This could indicate that the mound and the soilmarks are of geological origin.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
