Full Description
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of a possible rectilinear enclosure visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1994 (S1). The site is centred on TG 1249 4246. A stretch of ditch can be seen to run from TG 1254 4245 to TG 1252 4249; it then turns to the west and continues to TG 1244 4246 to TG 1245 4245 and then turns to the south to TG 1245 4245. This feature may define three sides of a rectilinear enclosure measuring 88m by at least 48m, with a ditch varying in width from 1-2m. The cropmarks are positioned around the find spot of a Roman coin and pottery (NHER 15605). Others sites within the area (NHER 6273, NHER 30451) also testify to frequent Roman activity in the area. It is therefore possible that these cropmarks relate to a Roman period enclosure. However, it is also possible that this site is actually part of the late medieval to post medieval field system recorded to the immediate west of the site (NHER 38266), although the possible enclosure is on a slightly different alignment and appears to be cut across by a post medieval field boundary on the 2nd edition map (1902-7, 25 inch) (S2).
