NHER 38344 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Possible Late Saxon to medieval iron working pits in Sheringham Park

A group of earthwork pits visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) within Sheringham Park. A cluster of ten earthwork pits is situated at TG 1321 4196, ranging from ranging from 1m to 8.5m across. These features may continue for approximately 200m into the wooded area of the Park, as possible pit-like undulations may be visible. However these were not mapped due to a lack of certainty. It is possible that these pits are the result of iron ore procurement, as is known at other pit groups in the area (NHER 6280 to 6281). These workings are thought to date to the Late Saxon to medieval period, although it is possible that this group of pits is the result of post medieval or even military activity in the area. However there is a possibility that these earthworks are related to the creation of the Park in some way (NHER 22881).
