Full Description
November 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of World War Two pits and trenches visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2). It seems likely that all of these trenches and pits relate to military activity on the heath. Although the site is in close proximity to NHER 6251, which includes earlier pits, which probably relate to iron procurement on the site. Therefore it is possible that some of the pits pre-date the military activity, however the freshness of the earthworks would imply that they are quite recent.
A section of trench can be identified running from TG 1027 4294 to TG 1028 4295, measuring approximately 40m long and up to 1m wide. A second area of slit trench is also visible running from TG 1036 4295 to TG 1037 4296. The ditch is zigzag in form and measures 12m long and between 1-1.5m wide. A line of three pits is also visible, these vary in size from 1-2m across. These are located at TG 1033 4295, TG 1033 4295 and TG 1034 4295. To the east of the site is another pit, measuring 5m across, located at TG 1038 4291.
