Map

November 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Group of large weapons pits and trenches visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and 1950 (S2) and dating to World War Two. The pits are all are a similar size and are roughly oblong. One is centred on TG 0999 4248, measuring 4m by 3.5m, another is at TG 1002 4249, 3m across. To the north is another pit located a TG 1000 4250, measuring 4m by 3.5m, this also has an extension to the south, 1m by 1.5m. To the west of the site are another two pits, which are linked by a straight section of ditch. The largest pit is at TG 0999 4250, this measures 3.5m by 2.5m, the smaller pit is rectangular and is centred on TG 0999 42496, measuring 2.5m by 1.5m. The line of the trench linking these two pits is followed by another section of ditch further south, from TG 0998 4249 to TG 0997 4248. These ditches have been cut into an existing boundary across the heath, which has been incorporated into the World War Two training and defences. These large pits are quite large for weapons pits, although it seems likely that they served a similar function.
