Map

January 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two spigot mortar emplacements, a possible pillbox and slit trench on Kelling Heath are visible on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1) and Ordnance Survey photographs from 1969 (S2). These features will have formed part of the military training site on the heath, although they presumably served a defensive purpose as well.
A rectangular structure is visible at TG 1038 4168, measuring 7m by 8m. On the Ordnance Survey aerial photographs it can clearly be seen to be roofless by 1969. It seems likely that this is a pillbox or gun emplacement or some sort. To the north of this at TG 1036 4169 is a spigot mortar emplacement, approximately 0.5m in diameter and sitting within a circular pit which has four slit trenches coming off at right angles. A second spigot mortar emplacement is visible at TG 1037 4174, this have only two trenches coming off the main pit. An angular stretch of slit trench is also visible running from TG 1034 4170 to TG 1035 4171.
