Summary

Areas of disturbed ground visible on aerial photographs taken in 1940 are likely to represent military activity during World War Two. Two possible military structures are also visible. The site may relate to coastal defence and/or military training, but too little is visible to discern its precise function. Given their proximity, an association with other large military sites visible in the area, such as NHER 42103 280m to the east, seems probable. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any element of the site would be visible on the ground today.

Map

October 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Areas of disturbed ground, almost certainly representing World War Two military activity such as pit digging, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1940 (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 4567 2440. Sites such as this are often associated with military training, as the earthworks and disturbance visible would seem to have served little strategic value in terms of defence. Two small possible structures are visible at the northern end of the site (at TG 4573 2453), but the aerial photographs are not clear enough to discern their function or even to confirm whether they were military in origin (although the latter interpretation seems probable given their location). Little is visible at the site by 1946 (S3), suggesting that it may have only been used during the early years of the war. There is no evidence on more recent aerial photographs that any element of the site now survives as an upstanding earthwork or structure.

It should be noted that the extent of the site is approximate, as it was partially mapped from aerial photographs which could not be fully rectified.
