Full Description
October 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 4765 1126. Four adjoining rectangular enclosures are present at TG 4770 1130. These are aligned on a northwest to southeast axis and are bounded by a double ditch in their southwest side. The enclosures range from 17m to 37m in width and are at least 65m long. Although northeast extent of the enclosures is not visible, it is likely that they were bounded by the modern field boundary. The double ditch along the southwest side of the enclosures is up to 4m wide and could define a narrow trackway. It turns towards the southwest at its southeastern end. To the southwest of the enclosures a linear ditch on a similar alignment extends intermittently between TG 4754 1117 and TG 4760 1127. A further linear ditch and a double ditched and banked boundary are visible as cropmarks at TG 4766 1116. It is possible that these cropmarks are also related to the enclosures to their north. Cropmarks of another enclosure are visible to the northwest of the main group of enclosures at TG 4765 1140. Only two sides of this enclosure are visible and it measures at least 47m by 24m. The date of these enclosures and boundary ditches is not certain. It is possible that they are of Roman or medieval to post medieval date. The relationship of these cropmarks to the adjacent curvilinear and linear ditch cropmarks (NHER 27717, 27718) is not known.
