Summary

A possible drainage ditch, probably of post medieval date, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Only a short length (approximately 60m) of ditch is visible and consequently it is difficult to interpret. It shares a similar alignment, however, to a group of drains mapped approximately 270m to the northeast (NHER 42150) and it may be a contemporary feature.

Map

November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A possible drainage ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)and (S2), from TG 4482 2321 to TG 4477 2318. It is not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps but seems likely to date to the 19th century when this area of marshland was finally enclosed and drained (compare Horsey Tithe Map (S3) to the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch (S4), for example). It shares an alignment and could be contemporary with a group of drains, also probably of 19th century date, mapped 270m to the north (NHER 42150). At the same time, it should be noted that the cropmark was only faintly visible and that its archaeological origin is not certain.
