Summary

An undated bank and ditch are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The southern ends of both features meet or are cut by a drain depicted on 19th century maps. The ditch could have fed into this larger drain, with both, and perhaps the bank as well, being of probable post medieval date. They could even date to World War Two and be associated with the probable shooting butts located immediately to the northwest (part of NHER 42103). Alternatively, both the bank and ditch could represent an attempt to drain and enclose the area which pre-dates the drainage pattern depicted on historic maps. The ditch may still be visible as a vegetation pattern on the most recent consulted aerial photographs of the site taken in 2002.

Map

November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
An undated bank and ditch are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1) and (S2), centred at TG 4600 2408. As with most of the linear features visible in this area, they are probably associated with drainage. Whether they were cut by (and therefore pre-date) or were contemporary with the probably post medieval drain to their south, depicted on Horsey Enclosure Map of 1816 (S3), is not known. They could even date to World War Two, forming part of the large military site to their north and east (NHER 42103), although neither looks like a fresh earthwork in 1946 and the ditch may be visible, again not as a fresh earthwork, on aerial photographs of the site taken in 1940 (S4). They are not visible as earthworks on the most recent consulted aerial photographs, taken in 2002 (S5), suggesting that they may have been levelled, but the ditch does appear to be visible as a vegetation mark.
