Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A dispersed undated and multi-phase group of cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs within arable to the immediate west of Waxham Hall (S1 to S4). The site consists of a series of linear ditches, field boundaries and possible trackways. These cropmarks are located within an area of several multi-phase and largely undated cropmark complexes, see NHER 27099, 27726 and 39022. The site is centred on TG 4364 2624, although the cropmarks are quite dispersed and the central point does not actually represent the location of an archaeological feature.
The site largely consists of a dispersed group of potentially unrelated and multi-phase cropmarks. These have been grouped into one record solely due to the fact that they do not appear to form part of the more coherent cropmark phases identified within the vicinity (NHER 27099, 27726 and 39022). Many of the features are mainly linear and curvilinear ditch fragments and at present warrant little discussion, other than their extent and position being recorded. One or two the features are worthy of note though. Centred on TG 4356 2615 is a linear which appears to be cut across by the at least post medieval field boundaries, it is also following a completely different alignment. This could indicate an early date. Also running from approximately TG 4376 2645 to TG 4375 2639 are two slightly sinuous, but roughly parallel ditches, possibly indicating a trackway. This feature runs up to the southern edge of a possible Iron Age to Romano-British sub-rectangular enclosure (NHER 42034), although the two sites do not appear to be related. A further possible trackway may be indicated by two parallel ditches to the south, running from approximately TG 4371 2633 to TG 4375 2633. These ditches are 9m apart. Most of the components of this dispersed group are quite fragmentary, however one of the ditches is quite substantial, running from TG 4387 2642 to TG 4382 2622, this is almost 200m in length.
