Full Description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two earthworks structures of unknown definite date and function are visible on aerial photographs in an area of enclosed marsh to the north of the Waxham New Cut at Lam Bridge, Sea Palling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4315 2548. The morphology of the largest pit would suggest that it is a World War Two light anti-aircraft gun emplacement, although there is no obvious signs of use or access in 1943 (S1). Therefore the pits could be post medieval in date and relate to some sort of extraction or industrial process. It is possible that the oblong sunken feature could be the base of a temporary structure. A chain of overlapping sunken area and banked platforms was also identified within this area of marsh (NHER 42057), although these appear less fresh and are therefore likely to be of an older date and not necessarily related. The possible interpretation of temporary structure platforms has also been suggested.
The largest is oblong, measuring 8.5m by 6m, with an entrance to the northwest and a surrounding bank, which is regular in shape and 2.5m wide. The other earthwork consists of a 3m wide semi-circular trench, with a surrounding bank around the majority of the earthwork.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 September 2005.
