NHER 42160 (Monument record) - Earthworks of possible post medieval narrow ridge and furrow

Earthworks of possible post medieval narrow ridge and furrow are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These earthworks are present across two fields on either side of the A47 road and are centred on TG 4971 0894. Parallel furrows are present on a north to south alignment in both fields. Their plan respects the surrounding field boundary and drainage ditches that partly post-date the 1838 tithe map (S3). Although some areas of marshland were taken into arable cultivation as a result of high grain prices during the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) (S4), the evidence from the tithe map suggests that this ridge and furrow is probably of mid-19th century date. In the northern field the ridge and furrow partly overlies a curvilinear levee bank, which probably related to a natural channel and was not mapped.
