Summary

An earthwork of a small medieval to post medieval square enclosure is visible on aerial photographs. It is similar to other enclosures nearby and was probably a sheep cote used to pen the animals overnight so that their manure could be collected. The manure was then transported to arable land elsewhere for use as fertiliser.

Map

November 2005. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork of a small square enclosure of medieval or post medieval date is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5). This enclosure is located at TG 4848 0747. It has a square plan, measuring 15m externally, and is defined by a 1.5m wide ditch. The position of this enclosure in the marshland indicates that it is of medieval to post medieval date. It is similar to other enclosures visible as earthworks on the marshland. Information from [1] suggests that these enclosures are probably sheep cotes. They were used to pen sheep overnight so that their manure could be collected. The manure was then transported from the marshes for use as fertiliser on arable fields on the 'upland' (S6).
J. Albone (NMP), 28 November 2005.

January-February 2023. Earthwork Survey.
Analytical earthwork survey undertaken ahead of proposed habitat improvement works.
This survey demonstrated the survival of this enclosure, which was shown to be connected to a series of other drainage features, including two potentially reworked natural channels that may have formed small enclosures.
See report (S7) and NHER 68440 for further details.
